Recently, I was meeting with one of our business partners; we provide Employee Advocacy Services to their clients. During the meeting we were reviewing the Population Health and Utilization Review numbers of the group’s performance; two groups of at least 250 employees each. The reports revealed the following:
The top 3: Diabetes, Hyperlipidemia and Hypertension and related illness had costs of approximately $200,000 each for diagnosis, treatment and prescriptions. Active cancer treatment was close to the same number. What was stunning is that Preventive Health costs were no more than $10,000 for the year!
What does this mean? Well, it means that we continue to be reactive to our health and not pro-active in managing it and trying to be as healthy as we can. We want lower healthcare costs but, are we willing to do our part on a consistent basis to help drive down those costs? Utilization and RX help drive up those costs and they can help drive them down. Which side do you want to be on? The lifestyle choices you make can drastically affect your ability to choose; don’t lose it. And, if your company has a program tied to wellness initiatives, take advantage of it and get involved; a good wellness program will set you up for and support you thru utilizing preventative medicine to keep you healthy and manage your costs.
